In February there was a measles case in a 13 year old un-vaccinated child in Orange County. He exposed approx. 250 other children, adults and possibly newborns. Despite the exposure of so many people there have been no further cases reported.
This is not a case of vaccination failure as the child was not vaccinated. The follow up and containment took hundreds of man hours of public health and provider staff.
In New York State there were four other cases of Measles reported in January. All of which were not connected to each other. Two of the cases involved babies of 12 months and of 16 months which traveled abroad and the children were not vaccinated prior to going over seas but should have been. Please if you are going to travel over seas tell your pediatrician and ask your doctor what vaccines they should receive
Also in March of this year there have been 16 cases of measles reported in NYC These were in both children and adults in Brooklyn, Manhattan and the Bronx..
Please be careful with your children and vaccinate. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to come to see Dr. Bernardez in our New Windsor or our Beacon office and she will be happy to talk to you about your questions and your concerns. Being a small practice we can spend time with our patients and their parents and give your children the persoanlized pediatric care they deserve.
